The Science Behind Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy isn't new. It has been studied in over 4,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies and used in medical and research settings for decades. Here's what the science actually says. --- THE WAVELENGTHS Not all light is created equal. The specific wavelengths used in red light therapy are what make it effective. 660nm — Red LightPenetrates the skin surface (1–2mm deep). Targets skin cells, collagen production, and surface circulation. Most effective for anti-aging, skin texture, and complexion. 850nm — Near-Infrared LightPenetrates deeper tissue (up to 40mm). Targets muscles, joints, and deeper structures. Most effective for recovery, inflammation, and pain relief. Every Velux device is calibrated to these exact clinical wavelengths. --- THE MECHANISM — PHOTOBIOMODULATION The scientific term for red light therapy is photobiomodulation (PBM). The mechanism works as follows: 1. Light photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase — a photoreceptor in the mitochondria2. This triggers increased electron transport and ATP production3. Higher ATP levels fuel cellular repair and regeneration4. Downstream effects include reduced oxidative stress, decreased inflammation, and increased growth factor release --- CLINICAL EVIDENCE Skin & Anti-AgingMultiple randomized controlled trials have shown that 660nm red light therapy significantly increases collagen density, reduces wrinkle depth, and improves skin elasticity after 8–12 weeks of use. Eye Area & PuffinessEMS microcurrent combined with red light therapy has been shown to reduce periorbital edema (under-eye puffiness) and improve lymphatic drainage in the delicate eye area. Muscle Recovery850nm NIR light has been shown in multiple studies to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), decrease creatine kinase levels (a marker of muscle damage), and improve athletic performance when used before or after exercise. InflammationRed and NIR light therapy modulates inflammatory cytokines, reducing chronic low-grade inflammation associated with pain, fatigue, and aging. --- SAFETY PROFILE Red light therapy has an excellent safety profile with over 30 years of clinical use. It is: • Non-ionizing (does not damage DNA)• Non-thermal (does not heat tissue)• Drug-free and non-invasive• FDA Class II cleared No serious adverse effects have been reported in clinical literature when devices are used as directed. --- REFERENCES All Velux devices are designed based on parameters established in peer-reviewed research.
